Located at Pousada de Saramagos, a village in the municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão in the North of Portugal, Riopele is one of the oldest and most respected companies of the Portuguese textile industry, turning 80 years in 2007.
Once a small family business, Riopele has grown to a large organisation group, combining spinning, weaving, dyeing and finishing activities. Undoubtedly one of the references among Portuguese textile businesses, Riopele is one of the largest exporting companies in Portugal with a turnover above 62 million euro and more than 1,400 workers. The company focuses on key markets like the United States, Germany, Spain, Italy, France and the United Kingdom, and uses a wide network of agents to export more than 95% of its production of fashion fabrics for the clothing industry.
All productive areas combined, the industrial premises of Riopele are spread over a covered surface of more than 139.000 square meters in a comprehensive built surface of 170.000 square meters. Riopele has 51.000 spindles in the spinning area, 14.000 spindles in the twisting area and 210 looms in the weaving area. The productive capacity of the company exceeds 1 million meters of fabric per month.
The historical course of Riopele has always been associated with great determination in the pursuit of development and social responsibility goals. This historical course is connected with the Oliveira family which always had full control over the company. The current board includes the third generation of the family and José Alexandre de Oliveira as Chairman.
